Ken against Jo
To gain further adaptation and flexibility in training and confidence in execution, it is important to train against a variety of weapons. Each weapon will alter the technique, since the means of attack and defense vary with the weapon, as do the range and angle of attack. Since two of the primary weapons used in aikido training are the ken and jo, it becomes important that one train in both. This way, no matter which weapon you hold in your hand—or even if you have no weapon—your mind and body are trained to calmly face any opponent, with any weapons, at any distance.
Exercise 1 Assume the appropriate ma-ai and ready stance (Figure 2-57). As the attacker raises his jo, the defender enters immediately, striking the rib area with his ken (Figure 2-58). As the attacker continues the downward momentum of the shomen-uchi strike, the defender blends with the attacker by executing a tenkan to the rear while intercepting, capturing, and controlling the attacker’s hand, in order to redirect and unbalance him (Figure 2-59). Pivoting from the center and hip, the defender reverses direction by executing kote-gaeshi to the wrist and striking a yokomen-uchi to the attacker’s neck (Figure 2-60).
